Inasa Beach

Inasa Beach, Sacred beach in Izumo, Japan

Inasa Beach is a white sandy coastline along the Sea of Japan that curves in a gentle arc. A small island called Benten sits near the shore, adding a distinctive feature to the landscape.

According to Japanese mythology, this beach was where the deity Okuninushi negotiated the transfer of land control to heavenly deities. Ancient chronicles record this as a pivotal moment in establishing the divine order.

The beach holds significance as a gathering place where Shinto deities are believed to arrive during the tenth lunar month. Local tradition sees this time as when the divine presence becomes particularly active at the shore.

To reach this beach, take about a 22-minute walk from Izumo-taisha-mae Station. A small parking area near the shore can accommodate around 25 vehicles for visitors who drive.

The beach features the Byobu Rock formation, a rocky outcrop that ancient texts identify as the site of negotiations between deities. This geological feature stands as a tangible landmark connected to the mythological events.
