Toyohashi Zoo and Botanical Park, Zoo and botanical garden in Toyohashi, Japan
The Toyohashi Zoo and Botanical Park is a zoo and botanical garden in Ōiwa-chō, Japan, spread across a wide area with several themed sections. The grounds include not only animal enclosures but also plant collections, a natural history museum, and an amusement park for families.
A private animal collection from 1899 near the main railway station formed the origin of today's facility. The site moved to Ōiwa-chō in 1970, and in 1992 the grounds expanded into a park with multiple functions.
The nickname Nonhoi comes from the local dialect of the eastern Mikawa region and combines two exclamations into a friendly greeting. Visitors encounter this dialect variation today mainly on the signboards and in the labeling throughout the facility.
The grounds open from Tuesday to Sunday between 9:00 and 16:30, with the last entry at 16:00. Strollers and wheelchairs can be rented at the entrance, and the pathways are mostly accessible.
The Asian elephant herd ranks among the largest in a public facility in Japan and lives in a generously designed enclosure. An underground observation gallery allows visitors to see lions from an unusual perspective from below.
