Kagoshima City Hirakawa Zoo

Kagoshima Zoo sits at the foot of Sakurajima volcano with views overlooking Kinko Bay. The grounds hold approximately 130 animal species and offer paths where visitors can explore the enclosures at a relaxed pace.

This facility opened its gates in 1972 with the goal of protecting wildlife and informing the public. It has since become an important educational destination for visitors from the region and beyond.

This is the only place in Kyushu where you can watch koalas, making it rare in this Japanese region. These koalas regularly draw many visitors who come specifically for this reason.
