Dai Kannon of Kita no Miyako park, Buddhist monument in Ashibetsu, Japan

The Dai Kannon monument is a white stone statue rising 88 meters high and visible from many points across the landscape. The figure stands within Kita no Miyako park and defines the character of the area around Ashibetsu.

The monument was completed in 1989 as part of the park development project in Ashibetsu, marking a phase of local infrastructure growth. The statue represented an ambitious construction effort that shaped the region during that period.

The statue embodies Kannon, a Buddhist deity honored in Japan for representing mercy and compassion, drawing visitors who come to pay their respects.

Access to the monument is through paved pathways from the Life Stage Hotel Tendo, with parking spaces and rest facilities near the base. Inside, elevators connect multiple floors where visitors can stop at different viewing levels.

Inside the statue, visitors can reach multiple floors by elevator and view the surrounding mountain landscape from different heights. This offers an unusual perspective on the Hokkaido region from within the monument itself.
