Sayamaike Park, Public park with three ponds in Mizuho, Japan.
Sayamaike Park is a public park built around three ponds in Mizuho, a district in Tokyo Prefecture, Japan. Winding paths run along the water and through planted areas, connecting the different sections of the grounds.
The land was used as a water reservoir during the Edo period, supplying irrigation to the rice fields around it. It was officially opened as a public park in April 1986.
The park follows the Japanese habit of enjoying nature as it changes through the seasons, with plants and water that look very different in spring, summer, autumn, and winter. Locals often come here on weekdays to walk slowly along the pond edges and sit on benches facing the water.
The park is about a 15-minute walk from Hakonegasaki Station on the JR Hachiko Line, and parking is also available on site. Restrooms are found within the grounds, and the paths are clearly marked, making it easy to move around without a map.
Amateur fishing is allowed in the ponds, which is not common in urban parks across Japan. After dark, the water surfaces are lit up, giving the park a very different look compared to the daytime.
