Rokuya Great Buddha

The Rokuya Great Buddha is a bronze sculpture in Hinode that rises on a platform and reaches a considerable overall height. The statue displays detailed craftsmanship and was cast from metal alloy to ensure durability over time.

The bronze sculpture was created starting in 2013 and took five years to complete, with its dedication ceremony held in 2018. This project represented a modern chapter in Japan's tradition of constructing major Buddhist monuments.

The statue depicts Shakyamuni Tathagata and continues Japan's tradition of creating large Buddha figures that serve spiritual purposes in their communities. Visitors experience a contemporary expression of this long-standing practice.

Plan for a lengthy walk from the nearest train station to reach the statue, as it sits in a somewhat remote location. Wear comfortable shoes and bring water, since the journey involves substantial hiking over varied terrain.

The statue was fabricated hundreds of kilometers away and then transported to the site in separate pieces for assembly. This logistical achievement required careful planning and precise alignment of all components during on-site construction.
