Nonoichishiritsu Library, Public library in Nonoichi, Japan.
Nonoichishiritsu Library is a public library in Nonoichi, Ishikawa Prefecture, built around circular bookshelves arranged in a stepped, amphitheater-like layout. Large glass walls let daylight into the interior and help define the different sections of the space.
The library opened in July 2022 and soon attracted visitors from across Japan. Its design drew attention far beyond the local area.
The library holds books and materials focused on Ishikawa Prefecture, including works by local authors. Browsing the shelves gives visitors a natural introduction to the region's stories and notable figures.
The stepped layout makes it easy to find your way around, as each level opens onto the next. Visiting on a weekday morning tends to be quieter if you want more space to browse.
The children's area is designed so the bookshelves resemble play equipment and invite kids to explore. That same area also contains a section on the agricultural history of the region, approached in a hands-on way rather than through text alone.
