Awashima Marine Park, Public aquarium on Awashima Island, Numazu, Japan

Awashima Marine Park is a marine facility located on an island in Suruga Bay with a perimeter of about 2.5 kilometers. The site features multiple pools and viewing areas where visitors can see marine life up close.

The park opened its gates in July 1963, turning the previously uninhabited Awashima Island into a hub for marine education. This transformation marked the beginning of its role as a center for ocean research and public learning.

The park houses one of Japan's largest frog collections, displaying around 60 species from around the world. This focus on amphibians reflects how visitors engage with the site's commitment to wildlife care.

Ferries run regularly from the mainland to reach the island, making access straightforward for visitors. You will need to walk across various pathways to explore the grounds, so comfortable shoes are recommended.

The park features large sea pens where dolphins swim freely in open water and can maintain their natural behaviors. These enclosures set the facility apart from typical confined dolphin pools.
