Ōtaki Cave

Ōtaki Cave, Limestone cave system in Gujō, Japan

Ōtaki Cave is a limestone cave system in Gujō with a 700-meter walkable pathway through the interior. The path passes naturally sculpted walls and mineral deposits created by water dissolving the rock over time.

The cave system developed over millions of years as acidic water dissolved limestone and carved out underground chambers. This geological process created the structure that was later made accessible for visitors to explore.

Rock formations inside carry names given by visitors who saw resemblance to famous landmarks, such as one called the Leaning Tower of Pisa. These local nicknames show how people connect what they see to the world around them.

A small cable car brings visitors to the cave entrance where a self-guided walking route is available. The path is well-lit and takes about 30 minutes to walk through the accessible sections.

The cave system holds Japan's tallest underground waterfall, which drops 30 meters straight down. This waterfall marks where the walkway ends and offers a memorable sight within the subterranean landscape.
