Risuta is a public facility in the Shimizusawa district of Yubari, Japan, that brings together a bus terminal, a library area, community rooms, childcare support, and city office services in one single-story building. The structure has a trapezoidal shape and sits directly at the bus stop that serves the area.
The facility opened in 2019, after Yubari's coal mining economy had collapsed and the city was dealing with a steep drop in population. It was built as part of a city plan to concentrate services in one place and give remaining residents a shared space to use.
The building brings together people of different ages through its reading areas and workshop spaces, and local products are displayed in rotating shows inside. It is one of the few gathering spots left in Shimizusawa where residents meet on a regular basis.
The bus stops right in front of the building, and everything inside is on one level with no stairs to navigate. Parking is available on site, and walking paths lead from the facility toward a nearby wooded area.
Large south-facing windows pull natural light deep into the interior and open a clear line of sight between the bus area and the tree line to the north. This connection between the transit side and the wooded edge gives the inside a feeling of openness that is easy to miss at first glance.
