Meteliai Regional Park, Regional park in Lazdijai District Municipality, Lithuania
Meteliai Regional Park is a large protected natural area in Lithuania that safeguards three lakes - Dusia, Metelys, and Obelija - along with surrounding forests and meadows. The territory contains ancient settlements, traditional villages, and habitats for rare plants and animals.
The area became a protected regional park in 1992 to preserve its natural landscape and human heritage. It contains remains from Stone Age settlements and demonstrates how people have inhabited this region for thousands of years.
The park reflects the relationship between local people and their landscape, visible in the traditional farmsteads and churches that sit within the natural setting. Visitors can observe how these spaces remain part of daily life and how the lakes connect to the region's identity.
The park has a visitor center on the southern shore of Lake Dusia where you can learn about the natural environment and local wildlife. From there, walking paths guide visitors through different landscapes and along the lakes.
The Trakas Forest contains a population of sessile oaks found nowhere else in Lithuania. The park also protects European pond turtles in a dedicated reserve where they thrive in specific wetland conditions.
