Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Simnas, Renaissance church in Simnas, Lithuania.
The Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is a Renaissance structure with a Latin cross floor plan, where a tall central nave is supported by three pairs of large stone pillars. These pillars are connected by arches that distribute the weight of the vaulted ceiling throughout the building.
This structure was built in 1520 by Jonas Jonavičius Zabžezinskis, the Grand Marshall of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Substantial changes took place during the 18th century, transforming key elements of its design and function.
The church displays a revered painting of the Virgin Mary and an organ built by local craftsman Jonas Geralevičius in 1911. These artworks reflect the spiritual devotion and skilled craftsmanship that shaped the interior life of the community.
The structure remains active for regular Catholic services and underwent extensive restoration between 2008 and 2010. Visitors should expect limited access during worship times and dress respectfully when entering.
This is the only Renaissance church in Lithuania built with a Latin cross design, making it an exceptional example of Renaissance architecture in the region. Six burial crypts lie beneath the foundation, holding remains from families connected to its founding.
