Žuvintas

Žuvintas is a biosphere reserve in Marijampolė County containing wetlands, forests, and meadows across its landscape. At its center lies the lake ringed by thick reed beds that form shelter for many different animal species.

The area came under protection in 1937 when a professor established hunting restrictions around the lake to safeguard wildlife. This early action marked the beginning of ongoing conservation efforts at this location.

The place serves as a center for learning about nature and how people work to protect ecosystems. Visitors can observe how researchers monitor environmental changes and study the relationships between different species in their habitats.

A nature trail guides visitors along the lake edge and is open for individual visitors to explore freely. Organized groups should contact the visitor center beforehand to arrange their visit and learn more about the site.

The area hosts more than 200 bird species, including a rare warbler that nests in only a few European countries. This makes it an important location for bird watchers and researchers studying these populations.
