Kretinga Museum, City museum in Kretinga, Lithuania
Kretinga Museum occupies a former palace complex with multiple exhibition halls, a Winter Garden with fountains, and spacious grounds. The Winter Garden houses canaries, turtles, and Japanese carps alongside the Tyszkiewicz family collection displayed across seven halls.
The museum was founded in 1935 as a collection of archaeological finds and moved to the Tyszkiewicz family palace in 1992 following Lithuania's independence. This relocation allowed the collection to be shown in a proper historical setting.
The halls display folk art, traditional textiles, and household items that show how people lived in this region. You can see the objects families actually used in their daily lives.
You can explore all seven exhibition halls and the Winter Garden with its living inhabitants, which takes several hours. Wear suitable shoes since the complex is large and exploring the grounds involves outdoor walking.
The outdoor area features an astronomical calendar with a sun clock that connects visitors to ancient Baltic timekeeping methods. This old relationship between sky and earth shows how people in this region understood time.
