Church of the Annunciation, Kretinga

The Church of the Annunciation blends Gothic and Renaissance architectural styles throughout its structure, featuring seven altars and detailed stonework. The building displays crafted details and artistic work in every part of its interior.

The building was constructed between 1605 and 1617 under the sponsorship of Jan Karol Chodkiewicz and was the first monastery in the Samogitia region. Its founding marked the start of monastic life at this location.

The church houses religious objects collected over centuries, including one of Lithuania's oldest organs. Visitors encounter these treasures while walking through the rooms and looking at the furnishings.

The site is open to visitors and offers the choice to explore independently or join a guided tour through the monastery complex. Visiting works best when you take time to move through the different areas and look at the details.

The central altar holds a burial chamber of the Chodkiewicz family and numerous Franciscan monks who served the monastery over the centuries. This burial place shows the long connection between the family and the religious community.
