Open-Air Museum of Lithuania

The Open-Air Museum of Lithuania is a large outdoor museum spanning roughly 176 hectares with historical farmsteads, buildings, windmills, and schools representing different Lithuanian regions. The grounds display structures dating from the 18th and 19th centuries that were gathered from various locations.

This institution was established in 1974 to preserve authentic building structures that were carefully relocated from different Lithuanian districts. This relocation made it possible to create a comprehensive view of regional architecture and ways of life.

Staff dressed in traditional Lithuanian clothing demonstrate historical crafts such as bread baking and pottery at various locations throughout the grounds. These activities show how people worked and lived in earlier times across the different regions.

The museum is located in the countryside and requires time to explore all the buildings and zones across its large grounds. It is best to wear comfortable shoes and allow several hours for your visit.

Each region of the site is surrounded by plants that actually grew in that part of Lithuania, creating an authentic natural setting for the historical buildings. This botanical context helps visitors imagine the original landscape as it once was.
