Church of the Annunciation, Gegužinė, Neo-Romanesque church in Gegužinė, Lithuania.
The Church of the Annunciation is a Neo-Romanesque church in Gegužinė featuring a three-section tower at the rear, with rounded arches and Romanesque-style arcatures across its facade. The building uses single-tier buttresses and ashlar blocks in its doorways for structural support.
Construction of the church took place between 1906 and 1926, commissioned by the Counts Tiškevičiai and designed by architect Orsiono Bongi. This period saw the creation of an important religious center for the region.
The interior was decorated by artist Jerzy Hoppen between 1942 and 1943, reflecting the religious and artistic traditions of the Lithuanian community. These works continue to shape the character of the church today.
The building is easily accessible from the outside and shows its architectural details from multiple angles around the grounds. Visitors should allow time for a walk around the entire structure to see all of its distinctive features.
The architecture was directly inspired by churches in Lombardy and brings Italian style elements into the Lithuanian landscape. This Southern European influence makes it stand out among religious buildings in the region.
