Čiobiškis cave, Sandstone cave in Širvintos district, Lithuania
Čiobiškis cave is a sandstone cavity located above Ryna Creek and contains two connected chambers that extend into the rock face. The formation demonstrates how water and erosion have gradually carved passages through the surrounding stone layers over time.
Archaeological evidence suggests that prehistoric inhabitants of Lithuania sheltered in this cave thousands of years ago. During Soviet times, local people used the site as a refuge to escape military conscription and for secret gatherings.
During the Soviet period, local residents used the cave as a concealment spot to avoid military service and conduct private meetings.
The entrance is roughly 5 feet (1.5 meters) tall and demands careful navigation through the passage. Visitors should remain cautious of unstable rock formations and falling debris when exploring the chambers.
A freshwater spring discovered near the cave system continues to carve new tunnels through ongoing water erosion. This active geological process means the cave remains in constant transformation with passages slowly expanding.
