Schloss Tilsit

Schloss Tilsit is a castle ruin in Sovetsk featuring stone walls and towers positioned on elevated terrain. The remains show the solid construction methods typical of medieval fortress buildings.

The fortress was founded in 1385 by the Teutonic Knights as a military stronghold. Later, the region passed to Russian control and the name was changed to Sovetsk.

The fortress displays traces of German and Russian settlement, with both cultures leaving their mark on the structures and surroundings. Visitors can sense these layers of occupation while walking through the ruins.

The ruins are located in Sovetsk and reachable by foot or local bus. Basic fitness helps since the terrain is uneven and pathways are not fully paved throughout.

The fortress fell into obscurity for centuries before local historians recently began documenting the remains. Today visitors can directly observe how time and elements have shaped the structures.
