Pajiesio tvenkinys, reservoir in Lithuania
Pajiesio tvenkinys is a reservoir in the Kauno district that stretches for several kilometers with a long and narrow shape running from southwest to northeast. The water is rimmed by reeds, trees, and bushes on its banks, with a shoreline measuring about 13 kilometers and a maximum depth of roughly 5 meters.
Construction of this reservoir took place in 1975 to support local farming with irrigation water for nearby fields. In 2008, a small hydroelectric power station was built on the eastern bank to generate electricity from the flowing water.
The location is easily reached via main road 130, which connects Kaunas, Prienai, and Alytus, making it simple for visitors to arrive for recreation or other activities. The shoreline is mostly accessible with paths along the banks where you can walk comfortably and observe water birds and local wildlife.
The reservoir is fed by small rivers and streams flowing mainly from the north and east, with the Jiesia River as the main source that also drains water from the western side. Many visitors overlook the diverse fish population that inhabits the waters and has been sustained through regular restocking efforts over the decades.
