Riga Town Hall, Town hall in Riga, Latvia
Riga Town Hall stands on the northwest side of Ratslaukums Square, defined by its mansard roof and bell tower. The building today houses administrative functions and includes a modern shopping passage integrated into its rear section.
The first town hall structure appeared in the early 14th century, with major reconstruction in 1750 and final restoration completed in 2003 following World War II damage. The building underwent multiple rebuildings to maintain its function as the city's administrative seat.
The ground floor once housed a municipal bank and guardianship office, while upper floors served as the Riga City Library. The building functioned as a center for both civic administration and public access to knowledge.
Visit early in the day when the square is quieter and the facade is well-lit. The shopping passage in the rear section offers an alternative view of the building from inside.
The exterior once displayed cannons captured during the Northern War, connected by chains to form a decorative fence. This unusual ornamentation created a striking boundary around the building.
