Riga Town Hall, Town hall in Riga, Latvia
Riga Town Hall stands on the northwest side of Ratslaukums Square in the old town and is recognized by its mansard roof and bell tower. The building houses municipal offices today and has a covered shopping passage running through its rear section.
A town hall first appeared on this site in the early 14th century and was rebuilt and modified several times over the centuries. The building was heavily damaged during the Second World War and reopened in its current form in 2003 after a long restoration.
The square in front of the building, Ratslaukums, is one of the main gathering points in the old town and regularly hosts public events and seasonal markets. The facade frames the space and gives the square a formal, civic character that locals and visitors both recognize.
The square in front is least crowded in the early morning, which also gives a clear view of the facade in good light. The shopping passage at the rear is open to the public and gives a different angle on the building from inside.
Cannons captured during the Northern War were once lined up outside the building and linked by chains to form a kind of fence around it. None of this decoration remains today, so only old records tell us it ever existed.
