Tanīskalns hillfort, Ancient hillfort in Rauna, Latvia.
Taniskalns hillfort is a fortified settlement site near Rauna that rises about 60 meters above sea level, standing 25 meters above Lake Dzirnezers. The flattened hilltop measures roughly 100 meters long and 30 meters wide, making it one of the largest such sites of the ancient Latgalian people.
The fort developed between the 11th and 13th centuries as a significant fortified settlement for Latgalian communities. Archaeological digs in 1927 uncovered remains of a wooden structure containing two living spaces and a furnace from this period.
This was a major center for ancient Latgalian communities and may correspond to Beverina, a settlement documented in old chronicles. Visitors today can sense the importance this fortified settlement held for early inhabitants of the region.
The site is easily reached from the P28 road that runs between Priekuli and Rauna, positioned near where the Licupe and Rauna rivers meet. Wear sturdy footwear since the terrain is steep and the ground can be uneven in places.
A notable feature is the 3-meter-high rampart at the northeastern end, which still offers views toward Rauna Castle ruins. From this elevated position, visitors can take in the full sweep of the surrounding river landscape.
