Druskās, Archaeological monument in Veclaicene Parish, Latvia.
Druskās is an archaeological monument in Veclaicene Parish that rises approximately 90 meters above Lake Pilskalna with steep slopes on multiple sides. The summit reaches 247 meters above sea level, offering expansive views of the surrounding landscape.
Evidence of human settlement at this site spans two main periods: from around 2000 to 1000 BC and later from the 7th to 10th centuries. Excavations in 2007 revealed these occupation phases, showing how populations returned to this location across centuries.
The site serves as a landmark for understanding how early communities lived in northern Vidzeme. Information panels along the walking route tell the story of these ancient settlements.
A nature trail of about 3.5 kilometers connects the Veclaicene administrative building to the hilltop, with information panels along the way. Wear sturdy footwear as the terrain is hilly and can be slippery after rain.
On clear days, visitors can spot Suur Munamägi in Estonia, the highest point in the Baltic region, from the summit using a dedicated observation panel. This cross-border view offers a rare perspective connecting two neighboring countries.
