Slītere lighthouse, Lighthouse in Dundaga Parish, Latvia
The Slītere lighthouse is a 24-meter (79 foot) tall structure standing on the edge of Blue Hills, about 5 kilometers (3 miles) inland from the Baltic Sea coast. Visitors can reach the observation deck on the fifth floor, which offers sweeping views of the sea and surrounding forests.
Built in 1849 by the baron of Dundaga manor, the structure initially served as both a forest fire surveillance point and a navigation aid for ships. This dual purpose reflected how the region valued watching over both its inland forests and maritime interests.
The lighthouse is a recognizable landmark in the region and received a commemorative postal stamp in 2019, honoring it among other Latvian lighthouses. It represents the connection between the inland forests and the distant sea, drawing visitors interested in how people once watched over both landscapes at the same time.
The observation platform can be reached by climbing the internal stairs and provides views across the surrounding landscape. Wear sturdy shoes for the climb, and plan your visit for clear weather to get the best views.
The rotating light beam operated until 1999 and the structure now functions as part of an environmental education program within the national park. This transformation shows how an old navigation tool serves new purposes in conservation work today.
