Klusais dārzs, park in Riga, Latvia
Klusais dārzs is a park in Riga spanning about 4.7 hectares (11.6 acres) and bounded by Jēkabpils, Daugavpils, Lazdonas and Katoļu streets. The space features mature maple and linden trees, narrow pathways winding through vegetation, and simple seating areas tucked throughout the grounds.
The park opened in 1960 on the site of the former All Saints Cemetery, originally known as Kiev Park. Several old trees from the cemetery era were preserved during the transformation, and the All Saints Orthodox Church from 1891 still stands at the park's edge.
The name Klusais dārzs means 'Silent Garden' in Latvian, reflecting the peaceful character that draws people seeking quiet moments away from the city. Locals use the space for personal reflection and remembrance, especially at the memorial stone dedicated to those lost in distant conflicts.
The park is accessible on foot without significant obstacles, though the narrow pathways require comfortable walking shoes to explore fully. Best visited during daylight hours when the quiet atmosphere can be fully appreciated and the old trees cast interesting shadows.
Beneath the old trees lies the preserved layout of the former cemetery, with certain vegetation deliberately retained during the 1960 transformation. Several of these trees predate the park by decades and silently mark where the original cemetery once stood.
