Augstroze Castle ruins

Augstroze Castle is a medieval fortification whose stone remains stand on elevated terrain overlooking Lake Lielezers and surrounding lands. The ruins reveal the layout of defensive structures and the spaces that once defined the settlement.

The fortification was built in 1272 as a defensive stronghold during medieval expansion in the region. It faced repeated attacks and suffered major destruction in 1601, after which it was abandoned.

The ruins show how people built fortifications to protect themselves in medieval times. Walking through the site reveals construction methods and defensive design choices that shaped settlement patterns in the region.

The site is accessible via walking trails that lead to the main areas of the castle remains. Wear sturdy footwear as the terrain can be uneven and muddy, particularly after rain.

The castle was never rebuilt after its destruction in 1601 and remained frozen in time as ruins. This choice allows visitors today to see how the original structure has deteriorated naturally over centuries.
