Old Bazaar, Heritage site and market district in Prilep, North Macedonia.
The Old Bazaar is a former marketplace in Prilep with narrow lanes, multiple stone buildings from different periods, and a prominent clock tower at its center. The structures date from the 18th and 19th centuries and display a blend of Ottoman and later European influences.
The bazaar emerged in the second half of the 18th century as a trading center during a period of economic growth in Prilep. Most visible buildings were constructed in the 19th century and underwent later restoration to maintain their original form.
The Čarši Mosque from 1476 anchors the neighborhood with its presence and welcomes visitors to explore. Metalworkers and other artisans maintain their traditional practices in small workshops scattered throughout the area, continuing methods passed down through generations.
The bazaar lies east of the main square and north of the Prilep River, making it easily accessible on foot from the city center. The narrow lanes can become slippery during heavy rain, and there are few shaded areas, so early mornings or late afternoons are more comfortable for exploring.
The clock tower was built in 1858 and rises about 38 meters above the surrounding buildings. Its neoclassical design makes it a distinctive structure that stands apart from the traditional style of the rest of the bazaar.
