Hühteeg Svita, Geological formation in Dornogovi Province, Mongolia.
Hühteeg Svita is a geological layer in the Choyr Basin made up of sandstone, conglomerate, siltstone, and mudstone deposited in sequence. The formation reaches a thickness of more than 100 meters and sits between the Khalzan Uul Formation below and basalt deposits above.
The formation was deposited during the Early Cretaceous period roughly 119 to 100 million years ago when rivers and seasonal waters shaped this landscape. These layers contain remains of prehistoric animals that lived in and around these ancient waterways.
Scientists from multiple countries conduct research at this location to study the remains of prehistoric creatures and understand ancient Mongolian environments.
The formation is located in a remote area of Dornogovi Province that requires careful planning to visit. Access depends on local conditions and preparation, so it is best to research options in advance before making the journey.
Fossils of unusual animals such as the long-necked Khurendukhosaurus and the crocodile-like Tchoiria were found here among the early members of their respective species. These discoveries help researchers understand how certain animal lineages developed in their earliest stages.
