Loosdrechtse plassen, Lake system in Wijdemeren, Netherlands.
The Loosdrechtse Plassen is a system of five connected lakes dotted with numerous small islands spread across Noord-Holland and Utrecht provinces. The water expands into different bays and shoreline zones with varying landscapes.
The system formed between the 16th and 18th centuries through peat extraction, with water management systems directing flows toward the Utrechtse Vecht river. This industrial use reshaped the landscape permanently.
The lakes serve as a gathering place for people who sail, kayak, and swim together. Local clubs and boathouses line the shores and shape the daily rhythm of life around the water.
Designated swimming areas exist at Vuntusplas and Stille Plas, where visitors can swim, while the beach De Strook offers facilities for water sports. The best time to visit is May through September, when the water is warm enough and clubs offer their activities.
Several houses sit on private islands scattered throughout the system, forming an unusual residential pattern. These isolated island homes are a distinctive feature of this water-rich region.
