ECI-centrale

ECI-centrale is a hydroelectric facility on the Roer River in Roermond that generates electricity from flowing water using turbine technology. The plant harnesses the river's power to produce energy for surrounding communities.

The station began operating in 1918 with technology designed to extract power from the river's flow. Ownership passed to Elektro Chemische Industrie in 1926, marking a shift in how it was managed and developed.

The building reflects how people in the region shifted from traditional mill work to industrial power generation using water resources. This transition between old and new ways is visible in how the structure blends engineering with the river landscape.

The site sits directly on the river and is visible from nearby streets, making it easy to locate and view from outside. Keep in mind that this is an active facility, so public access inside may be restricted or require permission.

In 2008, fish passages were added to allow river species to swim upstream to their spawning areas despite the dam structure. This addition shows how an older industrial site can adapt to modern environmental needs.
