Bliksemschicht, Observation tower and art installation at Princeville interchange, Netherlands
Bliksemschicht is an observation tower and art installation at the Princeville interchange in Breda, rising roughly 28 meters above the surrounding landscape. The Z-shaped steel frame appears light and open due to its perforated grid design, while remaining firmly anchored to the ground.
Built in 2009, the tower emerged as a deliberate blend of infrastructure and contemporary art at a major junction in Breda. Its location at the convergence of highways A16 and A58 made it a new focal point for this important transportation hub.
The Z-shaped steel framework shows how contemporary art can merge with public infrastructure in an urban setting. As you climb, the metal grid panels cast changing shadows and patterns that shift with the light throughout the day.
Climbing roughly 80 steps to the observation platform is moderate and manageable for most visitors. Once at the top, you can survey the highway intersection, railway lines, and surroundings in all directions.
Weighing around 32 tons, the structure was designed by architect Martien Kuipers, who merged functional infrastructure with artistic vision. This duality makes it a rare example where engineering and art stand as equals rather than one serving the other.
