Grote Kerk, Protestant church in Hindeloopen, Netherlands
Grote Kerk is a Protestant church in the Frisian harbor town of Hindeloopen featuring a single nave with round arched windows. The distinctive octagonal tower capped by a dome and topped with a ship-shaped weather vane stands out in the town's skyline.
The original building was destroyed in 1570 during the Eighty Years' War, after which reconstruction started in 1590 and the tower was completed in 1593. The rebuilt church then remained a stable part of the town for over four centuries.
The church displays two boards listing the names of pastors who served over nearly five and a half centuries. These records show how important this building has remained for the spiritual life of Hindeloopen's community.
The entrance was moved to the southern side in 1892 and displays the Hindeloopen coat of arms along with inscriptions from 1658. The relocated portal is easy to spot and the inscriptions give visitors a sense of the town's identity.
The interior houses an organ built in 1813 by L. van Dam & Zn from Leeuwarden, which arrived in Hindeloopen in 1868 from another town. This instrument has been producing music in the church for over 150 years.
