E3-Strand, Recreation area in Eersel, Netherlands
E3-Strand is a freshwater recreation area near the town of Eersel in the Dutch province of Noord-Brabant, built around a sandy lake shore. Wooded areas and open green spaces sit directly behind the beach, giving the site a mix of water, sand, and trees.
The site was developed as a leisure destination in the second half of the 20th century, when many former sand extraction pits across the Netherlands were turned into swimming lakes. The name E3 refers to an old European road that once passed through this part of Noord-Brabant.
E3-Strand is a popular spot for families from the surrounding villages who come here on summer weekends. The sandy shore and the grassy areas nearby fill up with people picnicking, playing games, and spending time together outdoors.
The beach gets busiest on summer weekends, so a weekday visit or an early morning arrival makes it easier to find a good spot near the water. The wooded paths behind the beach are best walked in sturdy shoes, especially after rain.
The swimming lake at E3-Strand was not dug as a lake but formed naturally after sand was extracted from the ground for construction purposes, leaving a hollow that groundwater gradually filled. This origin is common across the Netherlands, where dozens of similar lakes now serve as summer swimming spots.
