Noorderbrug, Road bridge in Maastricht, Netherlands
The Noorderbrug is a road bridge that crosses the Maas River, linking the neighborhoods of Limmel and Boschpoort. It features multiple traffic lanes in each direction and separate paths for pedestrians and cyclists.
Construction began in the 1970s as part of a compensation plan following the closure of coal mines in South Limburg. The project was an important step in restructuring regional infrastructure after the decline of mining.
Since opening, it has served as a gathering place where neighbors meet and spend time together along the riverbank. The crossing shapes daily life for residents on both sides and creates a visible bond between the two communities.
The structure is easy to cross on foot or by bike with clear paths on either side. When visiting, keep in mind that it is a heavily used route, so stay aware of traffic and other users.
The structure incorporates a sharp 360-degree curve on its western approach to overcome elevation differences and connect to the Bosscherweg road. This unusual solution made it possible to link both neighborhoods despite challenging terrain.
