Huize Overbunde, Monastery and residential complex in Bunde, Netherlands
Huize Overbunde is a monastery complex in Bunde consisting of a chapel, a square monastery building, and a school structure situated along Kloosterweg. Following major renovations in 2005, the site was converted into eight modern residential townhouses with underground parking.
The property was first recorded in 1381 as a feudal estate before Franciscan Sisters converted it into a monastery in 1876. This transformation marked the beginning of its role as a religious and social institution.
The monastery played an important role in the community by educating girls and providing care for children with special needs over many decades. This social function shaped daily life in the surrounding area.
The site is best explored on foot, as most areas are on level ground and designed to be accessible to visitors. The park with the Overbundebeek stream provides a pleasant environment for taking time to experience the surroundings.
The grounds include a Lourdes Grotto built in 1900 and restored in 2009, adding a spiritual dimension to the site. This small outdoor chapel is a quiet spot that many visitors overlook.
