Regge, River in Overijssel, Netherlands.
The Regge is a river that winds through Overijssel province, flowing northward through meadows and several municipalities over about 70 kilometers. It passes through Rijssen, Nijverdal, and Hellendoorn before eventually joining the Vecht River near Ommen.
Until 1925, the river served as a vital trading route between Hanseatic cities, with specialized flat-bottom boats carrying goods along its waters. Shipping declined as railroads and roads developed, making river transport no longer necessary for commerce.
Traditional farmhouses line the riverbanks, showing how communities settled and worked the land over centuries. These buildings are part of the local character and reflect how people shaped their surroundings to live with the river.
The Reggepad hiking trail runs 73 kilometers along the river, starting at TOP Ommen with clear signage throughout. You can walk sections of the route at your own pace or complete the entire trail over several days.
The river divides into three distinct sections - Upper, Middle, and Lower Regge - each with different landscapes and character. Walkers following the trail notice how the surroundings and the river itself change as they progress through each section.
