Prins Frederikkazerne, Leeuwarden

Prins Frederikkazerne is a former military barracks in Leeuwarden with a square layout built from red and yellow brick and multiple symmetrical entrances. The building now contains 197 residential units arranged to accommodate different types of living needs, including student housing.

The barracks were built in 1829 under city architect G. van der Wielen's direction. A major fire in 1860 led to extensive reconstruction between 1861 and 1863 that reshaped the building.

The transformation from military quarters to homes shows how Dutch communities adapt historical buildings for everyday living while keeping their original shape and materials. You can still recognize the strong square layout and the red and yellow brick walls that once housed soldiers.

The complex is located at Amelandsdwinger 201 and functions as private residential housing today. Since people live here, visitors can mainly see the outside and grounds rather than entering the building.

Inside the renovation, colored hallways in red and blue were added that contrast with the historic brick structure. Extra glass elements in the facade bring modern design to the original walls.
