L.V.V.S. Augustinus, Student association at Rapenburg Canal, Leiden, Netherlands
L.V.V.S. Augustinus is a student association in Leiden, housed in its own building on the Rapenburg, one of the city's main canals. The association offers theater productions, sports activities, and social events to its members.
The association was founded in 1893 as a Roman Catholic student organization, with several of its founders going on to become influential figures in Dutch politics. The building on the Rapenburg was acquired in 1921 and has been its home ever since.
The association carries the Latin motto 'Non vincit nisi veritas', which translates roughly as 'Only truth conquers'. Walking past the building on the Rapenburg, you can often see signs of an active social life, with theater, sport, and gatherings drawing members in regularly.
The building sits right on the Rapenburg canal and is easy to reach on foot from Leiden city center. Some events are open to guests, so it is worth checking in advance which ones welcome outside visitors.
When the association acquired its building on the Rapenburg in 1921, it became the first Catholic student organization in the Netherlands to own its own clubhouse. That same building is still in use today, more than a century later.
