Peperbus

The Peperbus is a church with a 75 meter (246 ft) tall tower that blends Gothic and Renaissance styles together. The tower is topped with a distinctive dome-shaped crown and contains well-preserved interior spaces to explore.

Construction of this church began in 1490 and continued until 1601, with the structure absorbing late medieval building styles. This long building period shows how architecture changed between the late Middle Ages and the early modern era.

The church serves as a gathering point where visitors can see the skilled craftsmanship of Renaissance artisans at work. The stained glass and wooden decorations inside reveal the artistic techniques people valued centuries ago.

The tower can be climbed via a staircase to reach a viewing platform with views across Bergen op Zoom. Wear sturdy shoes and be prepared for steep steps as you ascend.

The name comes from the tower's distinctive shape, which resembles a traditional pepper shaker once used in Dutch households. This playful nickname has stuck for centuries.
