Watertoren, Water tower in Sneek, Netherlands
The Watertoren on Lemmerweg is a 44-meter tall structure featuring neo-Renaissance design elements and originally held 350 cubic meters of water in its reservoir. Today it serves as an office building while maintaining its status as a protected monument.
Architect G. Halbertsma designed this building in 1908, and it was officially inaugurated on July 8, 1909. The construction was part of the modern infrastructure development that Sneek underwent in the early 20th century.
The tower represents early 20th-century Dutch engineering and serves as a landmark that reflects how the town valued both function and design in its public structures. It shows how technical buildings were once treated as works of craft and skill.
The building is located at Lemmerweg 45 in Sneek and is clearly visible from the street as you walk through town. Since it now functions as a private office building, it is not open to the public inside, but you can view it from the outside.
The tower was featured on a special stamp released by Dutch postal services in 2008 as part of the Beautiful Netherlands series. This was one of the few provincial water towers to receive such national recognition.
