De Vluchtheuvel, Former amusement park in Noordenveld, Netherlands
De Vluchtheuvel was an amusement park in the municipality of Noordenveld, in the Dutch province of Drenthe, combining rides, outdoor swimming pools, and a petting zoo set among tall trees. The site was organized into separate areas spread across a wooded plot, with shaded paths connecting the different sections.
The site began in the 1960s as a children's farm and small zoo before gradually growing into a full amusement park with rides and water attractions. A fire in 2010 destroyed the main restaurant building and set off a slow decline that ended with the park closing its doors.
For many Dutch families, a visit to De Vluchtheuvel was a regular summer tradition, often repeated year after year. The forest setting gave the place a feeling different from typical amusement parks, making it feel more like a day out in nature than a fairground.
The former park is located in a wooded area near Norg and is easiest to reach by car, as public transport connections in this part of Drenthe are limited. The surrounding area offers walking and cycling routes through the local forest if you plan to explore the wider area.
The park had a squirrel mascot called Norgie, named after the nearby village of Norg, who greeted visitors at the entrance. Many Dutch adults who grew up in the region still remember Norgie as one of their clearest memories from childhood visits.
