Charlois, Urban district in Rotterdam, Netherlands
Charlois is an urban district on the south bank of the Nieuwe Maas in Rotterdam that brings together residential areas, community facilities, and local businesses. The neighborhood features a mix of residential blocks in varying architectural styles and smaller shopping streets for everyday needs.
Charlois developed as an independent municipality starting in 1812 and was incorporated into Rotterdam in 1895. This merger occurred during a period of major administrative reorganizations in the region.
The neighborhood takes its name from the Charolais region and displays a mixed residential culture with local shops and gathering spaces that shape how people live together here.
The district is well connected to the city center through a dense network of metro and bus lines. Visitors find multiple transit stops that allow easy navigation and movement around the area.
In the 1920s, Charlois was home to Waalhaven airport, which served as the second civilian airport in the Netherlands. The airport was destroyed during World War II and left no traces today.
