Nelson Mandela Bridge, Footbridge and bicycle bridge in Zoetermeer, Netherlands
The Nelson Mandela Bridge is a footbridge and bicycle bridge in Zoetermeer that spans 180 meters across a railway line. It is made of concrete and glass with a distinctive blue and yellow color scheme.
The bridge opened in 1992 to serve visitors during the Floriade horticultural exhibition. It replaced an earlier cable-stayed bridge that had existed since 1973.
The bridge displays colors connected to Zoetermeer's coat of arms, and its name honors a South African leader. It serves as a daily passage for commuters and cyclists moving through the city.
The bridge connects Zoetermeer train station with the RandstadRail stop at Driemanspolder and provides access for pedestrians and cyclists. It is easy to locate and serves as a key crossing between both sides of the railway line.
After major renovation work, the bridge reopened in 2023 with new safety features. The upgrade also made it possible to extend the structure across the nearby A12 freeway.
