Hoofdpostkantoor, Post office building in Tweebaksmarkt, Leeuwarden, Netherlands.
Hoofdpostkantoor is a post office building made of red-brown Friesian brick located at Tweebaksmarkt in Leeuwarden. The structure displays two corner sections with gabled roofs and features the inscription POST EN TELEGRAAFKANTOOR above its double entrance.
Architect Cornelis Peters designed this building in neo-gothic and neo-renaissance style, which opened in 1903. During construction, remains of a former monastery were discovered and incorporated into the structure.
The building transformed from a postal service center into a hotel, preserving architectural elements while adapting to contemporary hospitality needs.
The building stands at Tweebaksmarkt 25 and now functions as a hotel with 83 rooms, a grand café, and conference facilities. Visitors can admire the exterior and explore the lobby area with its preserved architectural details.
During the 1945 German retreat, resistance members replaced real explosives with wooden replicas to prevent the building's intended destruction. This brave action saved the historic structure from demolition.
