Middelburg Town Hall

Middelburg Town Hall, Gothic town hall at Market Square, Middelburg, Netherlands.

Description

Middelburg Town Hall is a Gothic structure featuring an ornate facade with red and white shutters and twenty-five statues depicting counts and countesses of Zeeland. The complex now houses University College Roosevelt and serves as a venue for wedding ceremonies.

History

Construction began in 1452 under the Keldermans family from Mechelen and was completed in 1520. This extended building period reflects the growing importance of the city as a major commercial and administrative center in the region.

Culture

The main tower displays a clock that runs intentionally behind schedule, creating an interesting contrast with the nearby Long Jan tower. Visitors walking through the square can notice this time difference and learn about the building's playful relationship with the city's other landmarks.

Practical

The building is located at the market square and is easily accessible on foot from the city center. Keep in mind that parts of the building remain in active use for administrative purposes and events, so access to certain areas may be restricted.

Did you know?

The former meat market section of the building has served as an exhibition space for the SBKM organization since 1980. This conversion shows how the building has adapted to new purposes while preserving its original character.
