Waag, Historical weigh house in Market Square, Netherlands
The Waag is a weigh house on Delft's Market Square with a brick facade and wooden pediment. The building features large stone gates at the back and sits directly behind the Delft town hall.
The building was erected after the city fire of 1536 and served as a municipal weighing facility for goods until 1960. Its facade displays 1770, marking a significant renovation.
The walls display guild markers for goldsmiths, silversmiths, and the Collegium Medico Pharmaceuticum, showing the different craftspeople and professionals who brought their goods here to be verified over the centuries.
The building is located at Markt 11 and now operates as a cafe-restaurant where visitors can enjoy meals. While spending time inside, you can observe the historical architectural elements and the restored weighing mechanism from 1647.
The building houses a preserved weighing scale from 1647 that shows how the weighing process worked in the past. This device is direct evidence of the technical skills of Dutch craftspeople from that era.
