Berlageblokken, Architectural ensemble in Indische Buurt, Amsterdam, Netherlands
The Berlageblokken comprise three connected residential blocks of three to four stories built in brick with recessed corners and interior gardens. The complex spans multiple streets and provides housing units of varying sizes for different household needs.
The ensemble was designed between 1911 and 1915 by architect H.P. Berlage and is named after him. It received protected monument status in 2004 as three separate registered sites.
The complex takes its name from the architect who designed it and continues to shape the neighborhood's appearance with its distinctive brick style. It serves as housing for various groups and shows how residential projects influence daily life in the city.
The complex is spread across several adjacent streets in the Indische Buurt, making it easy to walk between the blocks. The interior gardens are visible from the street and give a good sense of the ensemble's spatial layout.
In the early 1970s, the complex underwent major modernization to improve living conditions and meet contemporary needs. This renovation shaped the buildings' appearance and structure, which remain inhabited today.
