The Oude Toren in Sint-Michielsgestel is a church tower built around 1500 with alternating layers of brick and tuff stone. It features diagonal buttresses and pointed arch niches that clearly show the Gothic building style.
The tower rose in the 15th century on a site where a wooden church had stood since the 10th century. An earlier Romanesque church was later replaced by this Gothic structure.
The structure displays Kempense Gothic features that shape the appearance of the central square. Its architectural style reflects building traditions that developed in this region over centuries.
The tower sits centrally on Petrus Dondersplein and is easy to reach. The adjacent Lunchcafé Toren4 provides a good place to rest and enjoy views of the historic structure.
Excavations in 1961 uncovered fourteen wooden posts from the original church beneath the ground. Researchers also found a masonry chamber containing wall paintings from the 13th century.
