Wernhoutsburg, Rural neighborhood in Zundert, Netherlands.
Wernhoutsburg is a residential area in Zundert located close to the Belgian border in North Brabant province. It developed along a historic trade route that once connected Antwerp to Breda and shaped the region's economic development.
The area emerged after transport company Van Gend & Loos set up a border office with stables in 1842 to manage goods movement between Antwerp and Amsterdam. These 19th century beginnings laid the foundation for later settlement and institutional development at this location.
The Lazarist fathers established Saint Vincent Seminary in 1882 in a former Van Gend & Loos building, which later transformed into a celebration center.
The area contains a residential park with around 450 permanent residents set on grounds that once served as a monastery garden. Visitors will find a quiet, mostly private space with a mix of permanent homes rather than tourist facilities.
A tramline connected this place to Princenhage from 1890 to 1937 and marked an important phase in the region's local transport. This connection allowed people and goods to move more quickly through the area and attracted further development.
