Huis Zuidwijk, Nature area in Wassenaar, Netherlands
Huis Zuidwijk is a country estate in Wassenaar covering about 19 hectares and shaped by the Van Wassenaer Obdam family over centuries. The property includes a main house with outbuildings, mature trees, and formal water features connected by maintained paths.
The estate originated as a fief in 1406 and once featured a castle with two towers as its main structure. In 1633, the Van Wassenaer Obdam family took possession and began reshaping the property to match their vision.
The name Zuidwijk refers to the southern location of the property, a designation still visible in how locals understand the area. The formal gardens show the skilled work that generations of gardeners carried out here over centuries.
The estate is managed by the Stichting Twickel foundation and includes protected buildings that form the core of the property. Access to the grounds is limited, so checking conditions in advance helps plan your visit.
Emperor Joseph II visited the estate during the 1770s and was impressed by its elevated position overlooking the region. He remarked at the time that the view across Holland from this vantage point was unmatched.
